I have an annoying problem with my hylafax server in that periodically, for no apparent reason it loses contact with the Internet. I would previously just reboot the machine, however, I figured out that just running the command ifdown -a to close all network connections followed by ifup -a to open all active network connections fixes the problem. I couldn't understand why just ifup -a won't work for the longest.....apparently something hangs and I have to close whatever is errant first.

Have you updated your Ubuntu ?

No, I have a kind of tricked up installation. I installed X-windows and the Synaptic package manager (Plus a number of other GUI programs) to a standard ubuntu 8.04 Server Edition, though, so will see... maybe just updating the system would help.

    Code:
    /etc/init.d/network restart

    Does that work?
