That link above seems to be for windows and snappyfax.

    The hylafax link is http://rebol.wik.is/Hylafax

Will these instructions work for Ubuntu 8.10 non-server edition ?

Don't see a reason why not.

I first installed hylafax on unbuntu 8.10 desktop edition box, and it worked fine. I'm using ubuntu 8.10 server edition for my main hylafax server because there are a lot of linux daemons that suck ram on the desktop edition, and I wanted a "lean machine, plus I figured the preinstalled apache web server on ubuntu server might come in handy. I did have to install quite a few additional programs to ubuntu server to get it to work right with the Windows 2000 VM I use "inside" of it for the synapse server. I have written most of these down, and if you are interested I am happy to share my list.

I think if you're a linux newbie you should install Ubuntu desktop edition instead of server edition.

That means you can remote in using a GUI and vnc, and administer things if you need to do. Otherwise you would have to be familiar with SSH, and the shell.

You will need about 512mb of ram.

I would also make sure that you have a decent external fax modem. My Motorola 28.8 external fax modem occasionally seems to hang, and can not be initialized so I have to manually walk over to my office and hard reset it.

If you had an internal win modem that did that, you would have to reboot the whole server ( well, laptop for you ).

    How would Faxing work ?

I guess I'll need desktop client software ?

    http://www.hylafax.org/content/Desktop_Client_Software

I would like PhoneBooks with All my physicians in it. I'll frequently be faxing things that will have nothing to do with Synapse (so I just can use the Synapse Fax numbers.....)

Which Synapse clients are you guys using ?

Synapse doesn't use any of the Hylafax clients ... it is its own client.

It communes with the Hylafax engine using the Cheyenne Fax server I wrote. This runs on the same box where you have installed Hylafax.

Can I fax something with MS Word ?

My secretary will need an address book ... is that available ?

if you wanted to do that, then you would have to use a Hylafax client that supports that.

I'm sure some do .. though it probably requires printing to a postscript driver first, or their own hylafax driver which converts the word doc to postscript.

You haven't used any before ?

    Jerry ?

I used one before but never needed it after I wrote my fax gateway.

I never used it for faxing .. just for looking at received faxes.

Graham has made the Synapse Fax Portal pretty slick now, however if you want a Windows hylafax client with a Windows fax printer, WHFC Client should work OK. I use it on a Win2k client machine connecting to a unbuntu 8.10 server machine. Hylafax server and Win2k machine are on the same subnet. Works fine for me...Graham said he had some previous problems with WHFC on his network. WHFC Client has an address book..I've included a screenshot of it's ODBC/Import screen. I installed the WHFC "Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS" following their suggestions, and have had no problem with it. It's a Postscript printer, so can open/send ps/pdf files directly without a supporting ps viewer application, but can accept faxes from any Windows application that prints.

    Try

    su -

I think it's the command to switch to being the superuser.

    I read about "sudo"

    I understand it now.

How do I change file permissions to user-list.r ?

    I used:

    Alt+ F2

    entered: gksudo nautilus

    >How do I change file permissions to user-list.r ?

    Use chmod

    eg. chmod +w ./user-list.r

    as superuser, or use sudo
