A groundbreaking study by Montreal researchers suggests ovarian cancer actually begins in the Fallopian tubes of healthy women -- and can be successfully treated before it reaches the ovaries.

The finding, in a study that has not yet been published, may steer the way toward better screening and treatment of a disease that's often fatal.

Oncologist Lucy Gilbert, head of the McGill University Health Centre's gynecological division, said that it's not really a cancer of the ovaries, although it's been called that for years because the majority of cases are detected in the ovaries, but by then it's often too late.

Study results, now in the hands of a leading scientific journal, stem from the DOVE project (Detecting Ovarian Cancer Earlier), which is run by Dr. Gilbert and her team out of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The theory arose from retroactive analyses of known ovarian cancer cases. But Dr. Gilbert's team is the first to trace ovarian cancer back to the Fallopian tubes in the general population -- a group of healthy women showing mild, vague symptoms.

Pre-cancerous cells in Fallopian tubes shed over the surface of the ovaries and the peritoneum, which is the thin lining of the inside wall of the abdomen, covering the uterus and extending over the bladder and rectum, and then transform into cancer, Dr. Gilbert explained.

Malignant cells fall on the ovary and that's why it is blamed, Dr. Gilbert said.

"What we found is that killer ovarian cancer starts in the tubes. We were surprised to find it there," Dr. Gilbert said of the cancer, believed to cause nearly 90% of deaths from ovarian cancer.

After years of telling patients it isn't possible to detect Ovarian Cancer .... until it is too late .... this incredible news arrives. It still seems like it will be hard to detect. Maybe some DNA swab test ? I still think Ovarian Cancer Fallopian Tube Cancer will have few symptoms until it is too late. But at least there is hope !
