Metformin reduces fat in the liver ...

"The key is that metformin doesn't work to lower blood glucose by directly working on the glucose. It works on reducing harmful fat molecules in the liver, which then allows insulin to work better and lower blood sugar levels," said Greg Steinberg, associate professor in the Department of Medicine of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. [source]

    But it doesn't improve NAFLD

Treatment with metformin for 6 months was no better than placebo in terms of improvement in liver histology in patients with NAFLD. Nevertheless, the use of metformin could still be beneficial in this group as it is associated with a reduction in serum levels of lipids and glucose. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00303537). source - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19811343

That being said, other research is more positive

While initial studies of metformin have been promising, long-term benefits have yet to be clarified. There are currently two large clinical trials (PIVENS and TONIC) that are being initiated by the National Institutes of Health to address this issue. Until the results of these trials are published, these agents should not be used in routine clinical practice for non-diabetic patients with NASH.

Looks like the Guidelines on NAFLD don't suggest metformin.

Pioglitazone for NAFLD ? No thanks. Head to Head I bet Metformin beats Actos in any category.
Vitamin E will help your NAFLD, but shorten your life ? No thanks.
Looks like weight loss is the way to go. Who knew ! ;)
