For most of our users, we expect that they will be linking to a billing/accounting program to handle the cash flows in the practise. However, there are likely to be some users just starting out who may wish initially to bill by themselves, perhaps using a free billing service. To this end, we will look at how difficult it will be to allow Synapse-EMR to generate the CMS-1500 data, and to print to the CMS-1500 forms.
i am in a practice where we do some billing ourselves (and using officeally)--any updates to filling/printing in cms1500 format? thanks and keep up the good work, dk
I was told that generating cms1500 forms was a no-starter as we had to use special colors to print the form so that it became invisible to scanners. I did write some code to allow one to print to a pre-printed cms 1500 form but since no one was interested .. I removed it. It is a while now since I looked at all those requirements and what was needed to print on those forms.
didn't know there was a color output requirement--we've been printing black and white forms, and so far seems ok (altho it's only been about 2 wks since we've changed over)..i'll make sure b&w is completely ok first, and let you know.
If you only print the data, and not the form itself, as black, that is okay because the scanning process knows where to look for the data. But if you print the form as well, it must be a special red that is invisible to scanners.
I intend to revisit the printing of CMS1500 forms. So, can someone make a list of the items missing from the patient's demographics etc that are needed to be added so that the cms1500 form can be printed.
I am also very interested in this feature. Unfortunately, I cannot answer your question as I'm not a doctor nor have I ever seen any of these forms before.
This is the new CMS-1500 form, http://www.nucc.org/images/stories/PDF/cms_1500_sample.pdf. It includes the new edit for the NPI #. Notice that it is not in color. It's cheaper to buy the forms than to waste printer time and coloured ink. The margins are not the real margins ( this is not a true image of the form). From the CMS website: "The only acceptable claim forms are those printed in Flint OCR Red, J6983, (or exact match) ink. Although a copy of the CMS-1500 form can be downloaded, copies of the form cannot be used for submission of claims, since your copy may not accurately replicate the scale and OCR color of the form. The majority of paper claims sent to Medicare contractors are scanned using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This scanning technology allows for the data contents contained on the form to be read while the actual form fields, headings, and lines remain invisible to the scanner. Photocopies cannot be scanned and therefore are not accepted by Medicare contractors. The NUCC revised the CMS-1500 in 2006; the new version, CMS-1500 (08-05), will replace the current CMS-1500 (12-90) version effective April 1, 2007. During the period January 1, 2007 through March 31, 2007, providers that use paper forms for claim submission will be able to submit either the 12-90 version or the 08-05 version of the CMS-1500 form. CMS will discontinue acceptance of 12-90 version of the CMS-1500 form on April 1, 2007. The CMS-1500 claim form was updated to accommodate the mandated National Provider Identifiers (NPIs). The previous CMS-1500 (12-90) form did not have the fields for reporting of NPIs. Further information on the CMS-1500 form is available through the NUCC web site. A link is provided below. CMS has received Office and Management and Budget approval for the CMS-1500 (08-05), as required under the Paperwork Reduction Act. You can find Medicare CMS-1500 completion and coding instructions, as well as the print specifications in Chapter 26 of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual (Pub.100-04)." ...this last paragraph is ironic, for they sent the wrong negative to the printers and fouled up a lot of people. <h2 class="editable">213B2 30th Dec 2007</h2> Prototype tab Patient/Details/CMS-1500 that is supposed to hold the default values for printing out a CMS-1500 form ( latest version ) I need someone who actually uses this form to download and run this beta. I need to know if I have all the fields that can be setup with defaults, or whter I need fewer or more. Also, I need to know if the field sizes are appropriate. You can not save the values yet in this form.
